Egypt AH 1223(5) 20 para
The coin shown is a billon twenty para from the reign of Sultan Mahmud II. It was struck at the Cairo Mint. The obverse bears the toughra, or signature, of the sultan enclosed by a wreath. The mint (Misr) and date AH 1223 appear below the toughra. The date is written as AH 1223 year 5, which translates to about 1812 AD.
The specimen shown was sold as lot 13203 on Sept 9, 2004 at the 2004 September (HWCA) Signature Sale #357, for 5. The catalog description reads "Mahmud II Billon 20 Para 1223/5AH (1813), lightly toned VF, struck on a somewhat faulty planchet, but with nice details and good eye appeal. Very rare one-year type in any condition! From the Lake Pearl Middle Eastern Collection."
